Celtic Wedding Traditions

I believe in creating meaningful experiences that inspire and connect utilising timeless Celtic rituals symbolising unity and devotion.

Let me help you bring your vision to life.

Handfasting

A timeless Celtic ritual symbolising unity and devotion

A Handfasting Ceremony is an ancient Celtic tradition where ribbons or cords are gently wrapped around a couple’s hands to symbolise unity, connection, and the weaving together of two lives. Once used as a traditional betrothal custom, handfasting is now a cherished ritual in modern weddings, vow renewals, and blended family ceremonies.

Each ribbon can hold personal meaning — love, loyalty, strength, heritage — allowing you to create a ceremony that reflects your values and your relationship. Handfasting offers a moment of stillness and symbolism that feels both timeless and deeply intimate. Literally tying the knot.

Perfect for couples seeking a romantic, spiritual, or culturally rooted wedding ritual, handfasting brings beauty, intention, and emotional resonance to any ceremony.

Oathing Stone

An Oathing Stone Ceremony is a deeply symbolic Celtic ritual where couples speak their vows with hands placed upon a chosen stone; setting them in stone.

This ancient tradition represents truth, grounding, and the permanence of promise, making it a powerful addition to modern weddings, vow renewals, and commitment ceremonies.

Many couples select a stone from a place that holds personal meaning — a favourite beach, a family garden, or a cherished landscape. The stone becomes a lifelong keepsake, carrying the energy of the vows spoken upon it.

If you’re looking for a unique, meaningful wedding ritual that blends heritage with heartfelt symbolism, an Oathing Stone offers a beautiful way to anchor your promises and honour your story.

The Quaich

The quaich, a beautifully simple two‑handled cup, sits at the heart of many Scottish wedding traditions.

When a couple shares a drink from it — whisky, mead, or anything meaningful to them — they honour a ritual of trust and togetherness.

This moment becomes their first shared drink as a married pair, a gentle gesture that welcomes each other’s families and celebrates the weaving of two lives.

The cup’s circular form echoes the idea of love without end, a reminder of the commitment they step into.

Wedding Celebrant Services for Unforgettable Ceremonies

Please reach us at LouiseBrandCelebrant@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

As an Independent Celebrant my sole aim is to ensure your dream wedding becomes a reality.  I fervently believe that you wedding ceremony should be as unique as your love; it can be religious, semi-religious, pagan – whatever style you wish.

For a legally recognised marriage you will have to register your intention to marry at your local Register Office.  The intention to marry can be registered up to a year in advance.

It is possible and economic to have a small ceremony to undertake the legal formalities with two witnesses present; this gains you a wedding certificate and can be undertaken prior to your Personal Celebrant-led Wedding Celebration.  Please book your registrar service to ensure you get the date of your choice.

A Registrar will say the same 41 words that are the legal marriage contract and complete a marriage licence for you, the next couple and the next.

A Celebrant will work with you to create the ceremony of your dreams; your imaginations are the only limit.

The venue can be almost anywhere an hotel, your garden, a boat, a glamping site, a vineyard; the possibilities are endless.

This allows you to invite as many or as few people as you want to.  Micro-weddings are growing in popularity, not solely for economic reasons but to keep the ceremony intimate.  Of course, following the ceremony what is to stop you throwing a huge party.

I will happily liaise with your Wedding Planner to ensure your day is planned in the finest detail.

I will guide you and your wedding party through a rehearsal, at the venue or place of your choice to ensure that everyone knows the structure of the day, the timings and is comfortable with their role.

I will happily provide a certificate confirming the celebration details. Please note that this is not a legal document.
